Shockwave Therapy in Atlanta

Shockwave Therapy Treatment for Pain Relief at Georgia Upper Cervical Chiropractic

At Georgia Upper Cervical, we focus on long-term solutions, targeting the source of your pain, not just the symptoms. That means investing in advanced technology that delivers real, measurable results. Shockwave therapy is one of the most effective tools in our clinic.

Despite the name, it’s nothing to be concerned about. Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive, clinically proven treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate blood flow, accelerate tissue regeneration, and interrupt pain signals at the source, delivered through a small handheld device with precision and comfort.

Whether you’re managing a soft tissue injury, chronic inflammation, or musculoskeletal dysfunction, shockwave therapy can play a powerful role in your personalised recovery plan at Georgia Upper Cervical.

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy has been a trusted treatment in medical settings since the 1980s, originally developed to break down kidney stones without surgery. Since then, the technology has evolved significantly, and its applications in musculoskeletal care have made it one of the most sought-after treatments in sports medicine and rehabilitation worldwide.

Today, professional sports organisations rely on shockwave therapy to keep their athletes performing at the highest level, managing injuries and accelerating recovery with proven, non-invasive precision.

So how does it work? Shockwave therapy uses high-energy acoustic waves delivered through a handheld device to penetrate deep into affected tissue. These waves stimulate blood flow, trigger the body’s natural healing response, break down calcified deposits, and disrupt the pain signals that keep chronic conditions from resolving. The result is faster tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and meaningful, lasting pain relief — without surgery or downtime.

Focused Shockwave Therapy

Focused shockwave therapy is the powerhouse of the two. It delivers high-energy acoustic waves that dive deep into your tissue, reaching chronic problem areas that other treatments might miss. Think of it like using a laser pointer for precision healing, zeroing in on the exact source of pain and breaking it down at the cellular level.

ProsCons
Penetrates deep into tissueCan feel more intense during treatment
Ideal for chronic or deep-seated painTypically requires more specialized equipment
Highly targeted for faster, focused healing

Radial shockwave therapy takes a broader approach. It delivers lower-energy waves that disperse outward, making it a great fit for surface-level injuries or wider treatment zones. If focused therapy is the laser pointer, radial therapy is more like a spotlight, covering a larger area to ease general tension or less severe injuries.

ProsCons
Gentler and often more comfortableLess effective for deep-tissue conditions
Treats larger, more superficial areasNot as precise as focused therapy
Quick and easy to administer

Zero Zapping

Shockwave therapy uses acoustic soundwaves, rather than electrical impulses, to deliver deep healing for even stubborn musculoskeletal conditions.

Whether it’s your bones, muscles, tendons, or ligaments on strike and making your life a misery, this tech will have stern words and restore bodily order.

Short sessions

Your boss doesn’t need to know this, but shockwave therapy treatments are done ‘n dusted in less than 20 minutes. You want to relax a little longer with a coffee before you return to the office? We won’t say a word.

Focused treatment

Shockwave therapy for back pain, knee pain, or elbow pain delivers small controlled energy pulses to the problem area.

We can dial these in to a small, focused area (great for deep-seated injuries) or radiate them out as lighter pulses that disperse energy across a larger area of your body to treat more superficial conditions.

Multitasking wonders

Shockwave therapy for knee pain can help underlying conditions such as plantar fasciitis, hamstring injuries, and Achilles tendinopathy. For back pain, shockwave therapy is ideal for musculoskeletal conditions and injuries, including bone stress injuries.

Shockwave therapy can also help with shoulder pain that arises from conditions such as calcific tendonitis or hip pain from bursitis. All of this from a snazzy little hand-held wand! It’s a true multitasking wonder, and our clients are already loving the results.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

Shockwave therapy requires no drugs, no incisions, and no recovery time, making it one of the most accessible and practical treatment options available. Sessions are straightforward, affordable, and fit easily around a busy schedule.

During your session, we’ll ensure you’re comfortable before applying a small amount of gel to the treatment area. A handheld device is then used to deliver focused acoustic waves directly to the affected tissue. You may notice some sound from the device and a sensation similar to a deep tissue massage, but the treatment should not be painful. Pressure levels are fully adjustable and will be calibrated to your individual comfort throughout the session.

As the acoustic waves are delivered, they work to:

Conditions Treated With Shockwave Therapy

From inflamed elbows and angry knees to wonky shoulders and chronic back pain, shockwave therapy gets to the heart of the complaint and offers profound benefits.

Some of the best shockwave therapy benefits are achieved for conditions such as:

Shockwave therapy is clinically effective for both acute sports injuries and chronic musculoskeletal conditions,  including cases where conventional treatments such as anti-inflammatory medication, corticosteroid injections, or surgery have not delivered satisfactory results.

If you’ve been told those are your only options, shockwave therapy may offer a compelling alternative worth exploring.

Benefits of Shockwave Therapy

Investing in the most advanced shockwave therapy technology was an easy decision, because when something delivers this level of results for our patients, there’s no question it belongs in our clinic.

It’s genuinely remarkable that a compact, non-invasive acoustic device can produce such profound therapeutic outcomes. That aligns perfectly with the core philosophy of upper cervical chiropractic care: restoring the body’s natural balance without aggressive intervention.

Some of the key benefits of shockwave therapy include:

Shockwave Therapy vs. Other Treatment Options

We have great respect for conventional medicine; pharmaceuticals, steroid injections, and surgery all have their place, and in certain situations they are absolutely necessary.

However, these approaches carry real risks. Side effects, failed procedures, and extended recovery times are all well-documented concerns. Repeated steroid injections, for example, are associated with progressive tissue breakdown over time. And when surgical interventions don’t go as planned, the resulting complications can be more difficult to address than the original condition.

What surprises us most is how often patients arrive having been told that injections or surgery are their only option. In our experience, that is rarely the case.

The human body is a remarkable self-healing system, and when it is brought back into proper structural balance through precise, data-driven care, it can recover in ways that invasive treatments simply cannot replicate. Shockwave therapy is a powerful example of this: clinically effective for conditions that have not responded to medication or surgery, with no downtime and no systemic side effects.

For most patients, meaningful improvement is achieved within 4 to 6 sessions.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Frequently Asked Questions

This very much depends on your provider and your coverage. Our team will look at this with you and discuss the options, according to your unique situation.

Again, this depends on the nature of your physical condition.

It might be a little uncomfortable at times (a sensation akin to a deep tissue massage), and there might be some localised short-term tingling, reddening, or bruising after your treatment.

You certainly won’t feel like you’ve trained with Conor McGregor, though (unless you have, in which case, we want stories.)

Your chiropractor will talk through everything with you and answer every question. We want you to feel comfortable, happy, and relaxed at all times!

Yes. At Georgia Upper Cervical Chiropractic, we treat patients through careful, data-driven, and bespoke programs tailored to their needs. You’re unique and we recognize it!

So, if we offer shockwave therapy for knee pain as part of your custom plan, it will be integrated with your other treatments for the best possible results, in the shortest time. (We know that your bank account cares about your treatment program, too!)

Shockwave therapy is generally safe for most people. However, as a general rule, it’s less suitable for pregnant women, or people with blood clotting disorders, active cancer, tumours or infections at the treatment site, or a cardiac pacemaker. If you have recently had a steroid injection at the treatment site, you may also need to wait a little.

Our team will work through your patient history to assess whether shockwave therapy is a good fit for you. Bring your questions and let us do the diagnostics!

There isn’t an ‘ideal patient’ for shockwave therapy treatment, but it tends to be particularly good if you’re struggling with chronic tendon issues, like plantar fasciitis.

The best way to find out is to book an appointment at Georgia Upper Cervical, and we’ll arrange to do a full assessment of your needs and the best course of treatment. Contact us today!
